Cyclone Idai Repair of Bridge Damage, Mozambique


Role: Senior Structural Engineer

Description: Professional services for the project management and design of structures and culverts in the Manica and Sofala provinces after the damages caused by the flooding of Cyclone Idai in northern Mozambique.

Responsibilities: Structural specialist leading the designs of the structures, oversight of drawings, tender documentation, report writing and technical support of site staff during construction.

Mombasa - Nairobi - Addis Ababa: Road Corridor Development, Kenya


Role: Senior Structural Engineer

Description: Part of the East Africa Regional Road Corridor Development Project, requiring consultancy services for the Detailed Engineering Design of the Garissa to Isiolo Road portion and all associated structures.

Responsibilities: Complete design of multiple minor structures plus compilation of tender documentation.

Client: Kenya National Highway Authority ( KeNHA), SMEC



Construction Administration for Flood Damage Repair, Mossel Bay, South Africa


Role: Resident Engineer

Description: The project involves detailed design and implementation of the replacement or repair of multiple river structures, roads and culverts in the Eden region after an extreme flood event.

Responsibilities: Responsible for supervising and ensuring good quality works during the construction of multiple roads, structures and bridges. Payment Certifcates, OHS, wayleaves, environmental protection, claims processing, chairing site meetings, conflict remediation, stakeholder engagement, snag list completion and final report.

Client: Department of Public Works & Infrastructure (RSA)



Klipspruit Road over River, Johannesburg, South Africa


Role: Senior Structural Engineer & Resident Engineer

Description: Engineering services for the preliminary investigation, detail design and construction monitoring of a large road over river bridge.

Responsibilities: Lead design engineer, project management, budget, cost tracking, mentoring of graduate engineers, review of drawings, documentation, report writing and then overseeing the construction as RE as well as Payment Certifcates, OHS, wayleaves, environmental protection, claims processing, chairing site meetings, conflict remediation, stakeholder engagement, snag list completion and final report.

N4 National Structural Assessment and Rehabilitation and Widening, Nelspruit, South Africa


Role: Senior Structural Engineer

Description: Detailed assessment of the national road N4, including visual inspection, test pits, DCPs, deflection analysis and detailed assessment report of every structure over a 100km section of the N4 between Johannesburg and Maputo. Design of all the bridge widenings and rehabilitations that were required.

Responsibilities: Design and analysis of structures to be widened, oversight of graduate engineers, oversight of drawings, documentation, report writing and project management.

Sydney Metro Northwest Rail Bridge, Sydney, Australia


Role: Structural Engineer

Description: Design of a new metropolitan train line north-west of Sydney. Supporting the high-speed train required a unique ‘sky train’ curved cable-stayed rail bridge. Works co-ordinated via BIM.

Responsibilities: Responsible for the analysis and detail design of the piers of the bridge.

N4 Sections 1 & 2 Reconstruction and Widening, Mpumalanga, South Africa


Role: Structural Engineer

Description: Rehabilitation & widening of the road and bridges between Greylingstad and Standerton (56km).

Responsibilities: Responsible for the analysis and the detail design of one of the structures that involved a simply supported train bridge widening at a high skew angle.

SANRAL Bridge Inspections, Eastern Cape/Northern Cape Provinces, South Africa


Role: Bridge Inspector

Description: This was a project commissioned by SANRAL to do an inspection and inventory of the bridges and roads in the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape and Gauteng. Inspection of 65 bridges and 250 culverts and reporting in accordance with the STRUMAN inspection method.


Responsibilities: Markay was tasked with the inspection of several SANRAL and province bridges. In the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape regions

Pacaltsdorp Interchange and Pedestrian Bridge on the N2, Cape Town, South Africa


Role: Structural Engineer

Description: The pedestrian bridge is a 65 m long continuous 4 span self-anchored arch supported stress ribbon bridge, with a maximum span of 21.2m. The bridge has semi-integral abutments and a 220 mm thick stress ribbon deck that spans up to 12 m between the crests of the arch sections.

Responsibilities: Markay was responsible for the complete design from conceptual design to detail design of the pedestrian bridge. The initial conceptual design was done using Microstation CAD and Sketch-up while the FEM analysis using LUSAS.

N2/26 Mt Edgecombe Viaduct Interchange, Durban, South Africa


Role: Structural Engineer

Description: The project involves planning, design, and construction monitoring for the upgrading of a major interchange. The new structural works includes two Incrementally Launched(ILM) viaducts, two twin-spine bridges, an underpass, and a pedestrian bridge. The deck launch is on a double curvature with the longer viaduct being launched from both ends. Technical challenges include complex geometry, irregular span lengths and the joining of two ILM decks. The two twin-spine bridges are pre-stressed. Drawings on shared BIM.

Responsibilities: Responsible for the conceptual and detail design of the ILM viaduct piers.

Infrastructure Planning at 2010 FIFA World Cup Greenpoint Stadium, Cape Town


Role: Design Engineer

Responsibilities: Planning the erf layout and stormwater collection system in a 600 Hectare Greenfields development in Cape Town.

Design of a reticulation system for the newly built Cape Town Stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Responsibilities: Site engineer responsible for supervising and ensuring quality works during the construction of a multi-storey apartment complex in Camps bay, Cape Town.
