Personal Background

Markay was born in Russia, to Eritrean parents, spending his early years in Kenya and more significantly Botswana, where he completed his education up to Cambridge A-levels. He then pursued his tertiary and post-graduate education in Civil Engineering at the University of Cape Town. His career then spanned multiple international projects and cities before settling in Mozambique. Markay's diverse cultural upbringing, combined with his global professional experience, enables him to adapt and positively contribute to a wide array of engineering projects and contexts.

The South African Institute of Civil Engineers (SAICE) recognizes technical excellence in Engineering. The Pacaltsdorp Pedestrian Bridge won the Vital Engineering 2016 Award for Structural Engineering. The interchange at Pacaltsdorp on the N2 is an exceptional example of a successful partnership between public institutions and engineering consultancies: SANRAL, the Western Cape Government and SMEC, working to the benefit of the citizens.
